Navigating the everydayness of raciolinguistic ideologies as a minoritized language teacher in Iceland

Linguistics and education Journal

Hello everyone! I hope you are having a pleasant summer and taking the opportunity to recharge before the upcoming academic year.

I am pleased to share my latest publication, co-authored with my colleague and friend, Dr Vander Tavares. Our paper, titled “Navigating the everydayness of raciolinguistic ideologies as a minoritized language teacher,” has been published in the journal Linguistics and Education.

In this paper, we explore the experiences of a minoritized, transnational teacher of Icelandic as a second language from a perspective of raciolinguistics, which expands our conceptual tools to better understand how race and language intersect and manifest in minoritized teachers’ personal and professional lives. We offer a novel contribution guided by the following question:

  • How do raciolinguistic ideologies impact the experiences of racially minoritized teachers?

Our findings demonstrate that raciolinguistic ideologies are ubiquitous not only in the participating teacher’s professional but also personal life, ranging from questions about his identity/background and choices of language to questioning his professional competence.

The paper is published open access.
